Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon (SSMO) Superior General Sr. Charlene Herinckx has received the Christus Magister Medal – the highest honor presented by the University of Portland. The award presentation took place during the University of Portland Commencement Ceremony, held at the Chiles Center on May 7, 2017.
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Marylhurst University, Sr. Charlene earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Portland in 1978 and a second master’s degree from the University of San Francisco.
A teacher and principal at schools across the Portland metro region, she also served on the National Religious Vocation Conference Board. Sr. Charlene was elected Superior General of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in 2010 and was re-elected in 2015.
In citing Sr. Charlene’s accomplishments in a lifetime of ministry and service, the university noted: “Beloved and respected by her friends and colleagues, Sr. Charlene embodies holistically the key traits of the SSMO charism: prayer, love, compassion, and, above all, joy.”
Nearly a dozen of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon attended the ceremony to applaud the honors for Sr. Charlene and the degree presentation to Sr. Thuy and Sr. Colleen.
