WISDOM OF THE SISTERS
Sister Victoria Nuttman
As a member of a religious community for over 75 years, what wisdom would you like to share with us?
Since my acceptance into the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in 1928, I’ve seen many changes in how we think of ourselves, our religious commitment, and the world. While I know that all religious communities functioned in the same way in those early days, some of the rules and restrictions were not really helpful to developing a mature outlook on one’s own life or on the world.
Without a doubt, the “renewal of religious life” requested by Vatican Council II created some very interesting times! But I’m glad we have weather the transition because my vocation is one of the most important gifts I’ve received. What helped sustain me was the companionship of other Sisters; their support of me in my ministry as a teacher and in my life as a Sister made all the difference!
Everyone has to face the challenges that arise and so I would suggest doing so with prayer, patience, and perseverance – and a little help from your friends.
