It all started with an admiration for my father's aunt, a loving and cheerful Sister, who came to visit us often. She never complained of the distance she walked on an uneven dusty road. I still remember her caring and peaceful face. So I grew up dreaming of being just like her. When I was seventeen years old, I visited my great-aunt’s community with the intention of become one of them, but they sent me back home!
The following year I came to the United Stated with the illusion of finding a convent or someone to lead me to a religious community. Unable to find either of them, I tried to give up my childhood dream. I bought beautiful clothes, went to parties, and fell in love. But deep inside me I felt an emptiness that no beautiful clothes or human love could fill.
Finally my dream came true when I entered the community of the Sisters of Saint Mary of Oregon. I have found God to be more than I can express. It is God’s faithful love that has taught me so much more than I can imagine - from learning English, to becoming a certified nurse’s assistant, to becoming a vital part of my religious community. Today, when I care for the elders in the Alzheimer’s Unit at Maryville Nursing Home, I am continuing the life of service that I admired in my father’s aunt.
