She is one of the most famous saints in history – a peasant girl who declared that she had experienced a vision and heard the voice of St. Michael the Archangel.

Condemned for wearing men’s clothing, she successfully led French troops against the English. Placed on trial for witchcraft, she was condemned and burned at the stake in 1431.

Her story has lived on through books, plays, and music. Her feast day is May 30.

The Renaissance was just beginning when Catherine Benincasa was born to a prosperous wool dyer in northern Italy.

When her parents tried to arrange a marriage, she cut off her hair in protest. She eventually joined the Dominican Third Order and spent three years in seclusion and prayer.

Working as a nurse, she cared for victims of the Black Death, digging graves for those who died and burying them herself. She accompanied prisoners to their executions and prayed for them until the final moments of their lives.

She spent the last two years of her life in Rome, pleading for unity of the Church and an end to the Great Schism. She died in 1380 at the age of 33.

For a woman of a relatively young age – a woman living in those historic times – she had an exceptional influence on politics and world history.

First of all…what exactly is a “blog?” A blog is a personal journal published on the World Wide Web consisting of entries that may be written words or recorded in an audio or video format. “Blog” comes from the two words “web” and “log.” The words web and log smoosh together to become “blog!” And there you have it!

Blogging fits me well because I like to write, take still and live photos and record sounds. Blogging is an enjoyable format for me to share what is going on behind the scenes at CYO/Camp Howard where I serve as Executive Director and at home in the convent.

I embraced the social media because I work with youth and I want to speak their language and provide feedback to them in a way to which they can relate. A natural “archivist” at heart, these formats provide a historical document that can be returned to years later to experience change and growth sort of like the new timeline on Facebook.

I am able to see statistics on my blog, including how many people have viewed it today and every day since I started! It does not tell me who visited unless they leave a comment. I really enjoy comments so if you visit, be sure to say hello!

I enjoy posting videos of championship games. I can see the activity after school gets out and the kids are watching them as it is evident by the statistics. I like to have interesting pictures to post and people enjoy seeing what is going on at Camp Howard.

Writing about convent life seems to be interesting to people as well and I enjoy sharing our life with people. Teasing people with topic titles is fun and my favorite was “How Did CYO Know that St. Pius X would Win the Fourth Grade Boys Championship?” Lots of people read that entry and of course the reason we knew was that St. Pius X played St. Pius X! But the title teased them into reading it and that is all part of the fun!

You can follow my blog here: http://sisterkrista.wordpress.com/ Happy reading!

The gifts have been made, and the candy and cookies are ready. Shoppers will be welcomed this Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Maryville Nursing Home on the SSMO campus at Murray and Farmington in Beaverton. Please join us for Christmas drinks and cookies and shopping for great hand-crafted and unique items. Renew memories of years past and contribute to the joy and festive celebrations for our honored residents at Maryville–all while gettting some shopping done.

The bazaar has a five-year tradition that brings the Christmas spirit to our friends and families at Maryville. Sisters Alberta Schwall and Marilyn LeDoux have joined with retired teachers from St. Matthew’s School in Hillsboro to prepare Christmas goodies and surprises for shoppers. The proceeds of the sale will serve to enhance the resources of the Activity Department at Maryville.

Did you know that one Friday evening each month the Sisters schedule a Reconciliation Service? The prayer service, which is developed by one or two Sisters, is held prior to an opportunity for private confession.

The following day we have what is called our monthly Recollection Day. It is time for prayer and quiet reflection. This year the Spirituality Committee has chosen to use the life and words of particular saints for the reflection materials prepared for the day.

In October, we focused on St. Francis of Assisi. Print your own St. Francis of Assisi reflection sheet here. >

This month the special saint is St. Frances Cabrini. Although she was born in Italy, she is the first citizen of the United State to be canonized a saint. You may print your own reflection sheet here for St. Frances Cabrini >.

Submitted by Sr. Anna Hertel, SSMO

Recently I read an article on Skills for Celibacy in which a section on Skills for Generativity was included. It acknowledged that the ordinary expression of generativity is through parenthood, but the activity can take many other forms of care. The central notion is that of giving life.

Religious life has been an ongoing opportunity of giving life for me.

I began teaching first graders, when kindergarten was not mandatory. So I was the first to take these young children from their parents. It required that I give these young children the love and security to leave their parents.

Later, I taught eighth graders. By then I had the personal maturity to guide these young people, who were of an age to begin making choices, into making choices that would be life giving.

When I was almost 60, I was Pastoral Associate at a small coastal town. My work included youth ministry. I never apologized for being “old.” I realized how important the grandmother figure was to them: someone who would be there for them, listen to them, and care about them.

In my last Pastoral assignment, a third of my work was with the sick and elderly. Having been very sick at one time in my life, I could empathize with their suffering. I also found that my visiting and praying with the sick and dying also brought comfort to their family members.

I firmly believe that through the working of the Holy Spirit, that I have been able to “give life” to many people as a religious woman.
